Burners / Stingers

Prevention and Treatment of Youth Sport Injuries
an Online Resource

Burners and stingers occur in approximately Fifty percent of high school football players during their sport participation, however this can be a sign of a more serious and permanent neural condition. Symptoms of burners and stingers are often transient and resolve spontaneously. No athlete should return to participation while symptoms persist. For football players a neck roll or cowboy collar can be used to protect against brachial plexus compression. Athletes with spinal stenosis (narrowing) are at greater risk of permanent injury to the spinal cord. If symptoms persist a neurosurgeon should be consulted.
